The Fighting Scots sparked the 2017-18 season off with a 9-5 win against the Tufts University Jumbos over the Homecoming weekend.

Eight skaters contributed to the final score. Captain, Luke Tremblay ’17 and Matthew Cole 21’ combined for 49 saves in net to ensure the result. The Scots scored twice in the first period followed by Tufts one goal.

Tufts made 15 shot attempts, all of which were saved by Tremblay. On the offensive end, Nick Palandjian ’17 scored right from the start after receiving a dish from Jacob Hryzan ‘20. Then, freshman forward, Sam Bowley ‘21 put back a rebound off of Palandjian’s shot to put the Scots back up with 4 minutes remaining in the first period. Gordon scored five times in the second period out of the seven. Captain Chris Thanopoulos ’19 and defenseman Holden Worth ‘20 also contributed. The Scots scored three more times in the second period, securing them at 7-3.

Comfortable with a four goal lead, the Scots sat back during the third period. The Scots were bombarded by 22 shots in the period, and out of the many shot attempts they only let two goals slide. With 7:49 left in the game, Cole replaced Tremblay in net to finish out the game.

This will be the second year that the Scots have continued with the hockey team. “There is something special about being able to say you were a part of something when it first got started. That is the feeling with this team” says Worth. Although they have a short bench, the team consist of solid players who are highly skilled.

Their opening game against Tufts proved that the Scots can find the back of the net. However, the team is still learning how to play together. Worth says “Each practice we get better and our team gets closer and closer to being a unit” he adds, “each player learns more about what his teammates expect from him on the ice”.

Of the fans, Worth said, “we had so many people show up to support us and they brought so much excitement with them and never stopped cheering for us.”

The Scots hope to keep the same rigor they’ve brought to the ice in previous games. “We can only hope that we can have a fan base like that at every home game because it is very hard to play poorly or lose with support like that.”
