Welcome back readers,
Everyone is quick to say “in times like these…” or “in this day and age…” and follow their comment criticizing the state of the world. Everyone thinks violence like this is new and ground-breaking. News explodes with the same headlines, name topics, same names, shot, killed, stabbed. It’s triggering, yes, but if we are talking about “in this day and age,” don’t you feel a little desensitized? These things happen every single day. However, with our ever-increasing thirst for new news, it seems we cannot get enough. We have built up our own desensitization. I think as humans, we then choose to expect defeat in this area. If these events keep progressing, and news keeps discouraging us, what more is there we can do? We can only rally so much, we can only fight so much, and as Christians, we begin to feel like we can only pray so much.
So “in times like these” as media consumers, how do we stay unjaded, motivated, and loving at the same time? How do we continue to write and read the grotesque subjects of news pieces, and how on earth do we not allow ourselves to get used to the evil that surrounds us? Considering myself a journalist and equally immersed in it, I find it hard to carry out my passions when world newsies also name themselves the same as me: a journalist. How do I struggle to write about an art gallery on campus while there are crime scenes bleeding stories that writers have to step up to cover. Journalism is heavy and oftentimes repetitive, though God needs His people there too, covering horror stories one day and creative pieces another day. God needs His people stepping up and exalting His name through it all. Biblically we know, He will be glorified. It seems as if art and Death have lived too close beside each other since Eden. As I pull together our college’s news outlet over and over again, I will never know how to balance the injustice and the beautiful. The world has been bound with evil since the Garden. But as a Journalist, I hope my job of presenting information feeds you with knowledge without handing you the wrong fruit. I hope in your own consumption of media, you would also know of something greater. News is needed, yes, but can your Faith be bigger?
Love and etc.
