Gordon College gears up for an exciting Homecoming & Family Weekend on September 26–27, 2025. One of the most anticipated times of the year, Homecoming brings students, alumni, faculty, families, and local friends of the Wenham community together to reconnect, celebrate, and make new memories.
Among the many highlights of the weekend—including the Alumni Awards & Reunion Brunch, athletic games, art exhibitions, faculty connections, and food trucks—the Scot Trot 5K and Kids’ Fun Run stand out as signature moments of energy, tradition, and togetherness.
Growing Traditions, Growing Community
Mickey H. Miela, Gordon’s event coordinator for the Scot Trot 5K, says the race has expanded in exciting ways over the past three years she’s been at the helm—and it’s growing in the right direction.
“Since we started this, we have had local club cross country teams join us and hope to engage the greater Wenham community each year.”
That growth reflects a broader goal: not only to sustain tradition but to expand it—bringing in more people who align with Gordon’s values and spirit.
More Than Just a Race
Beyond the competition, the Scot Trot 5K’s purpose is deeply rooted in community.
“It is a great way to kick off Homecoming weekend and build community through cheering each other on,” says Miela.
There’s also a strong sense of place. The course, she notes, “shows off our beautiful campus and woods.” For many, the scenery and physical surroundings make the run more than just another workout; it becomes part of what “Gordon home”means.
“It is one of my favorite 5K courses,” she adds.
Tradition, Alumni, and Memories
For Gordon alumni, Homecoming is more than just another campus event—it’s part of the college’s broader history and shared experience. The Scot Trot provides:
“Students and alumni have the opportunity to bond with each other, as well as hopefully bring back memories of their LaVida 8-mile run,” Miela explains.
While the Scot Trot has its own unique character, it echoes the LaVida tradition, connecting past and present generations through shared stories.
One standout moment from past races? The Kids’ Fun Run, which takes place just before the main 5K.
“Last year, my two-year-old daughters ran with the entire track and field team cheering them on. It was adorable,” she recalls.
Moments like that capture what makes Homecoming more than a ceremony: it’s about warmth, belonging, and visible joy.

Why It Matters
For Miela, the Scot Trot captures what Homecoming is all about: tradition, connection, and community. The event continues to grow each year while maintaining its welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
As Gordon prepares for Homecoming 2025, the Scot Trot 5K is a reminder that community is built step by step, run by run. Whether or not you cross the finish line first, chances are you’ll leave with something more meaningful: connection, hope, and a deeper sense of belonging.
