Former Gordon President Dr. Michael Lindsay named Gordon College Vice President of Academic Initiatives Dr. Jewerl Maxwell the Provost of Taylor University last Friday, the 1st of October. The position was left vacant when previous Taylor Provost Dr. Michael Hammond was announced the next President of Gordon College in April of 2021.

According to the announcement released by Taylor University, Maxwell was identified as the top candidate for the job in a nationwide search conducted by the executive search firm JobfitMatters. Maxwell was then selected by Lindsay with the assistance of a Taylor search committee. Maxwell is expected to start his new position on November 1st

During his time at Gordon, Maxwell served as the VP of Academic Initiatives and taught in the Political Science Department. One of his most notable accomplishments includes raising $4.3 million for various graduate-level Gordon programs, further expanding the School of Graduate, Professional, and Extended Learning. Speaking about his work at Gordon, Maxwell said that he is most proud of his work with the Graduate Leadership Program, an online Master’s program geared particularly towards Leadership roles in education.

“Through this program, we established new partnerships with dozens of K-12 Christian schools across the United States, we established an international partnership in Brazil, and we launched new partnerships with leaders of the classical Christian school movement.”

In addition to being a faculty member of the college, Maxwell has been published in the academic journal PS: Political Science & Politics and has recently co-authored a book, entitled Tough Times for the President.

Maxwell reflected on his time at the college.

“I have had an incredible seven years at Gordon. The faculty and staff are an incredible group of people who genuinely love the Lord, love Gordon, and love our students. Even during difficult circumstances, I am reminded of how blessed Gordon is to have such an incredible group of people.”

Maxwell went on to comment on the Lord’s providence.

“I have learned over the years that every time I think that I have my plans established, the Lord opens up new doors….I believe this is where He is leading me to be.”

Lindsay expressed his excitement about Dr. Maxwell’s selection in a statement published by Taylor University.

“Jewerl Maxwell has been uniquely prepared for the challenge of our Provost’s role at Taylor University….He has a great track record of working with and caring for faculty in a Christian-liberal arts setting, as well as a vibrant faith.”

Lindsay further emphasized Maxwell’s fit for the role.

“I believe Jewerl’s leadership will serve to advance our distinctive mission, strengthen our faculty, and positively impact our community.”

As Provost, Maxwell wishes to “build upon Taylor’s already incredible academic reputation and expand the circles of learners that have access to a Taylor education” while growing Taylor’s connections “locally, nationally, and internationally.” On a personal level, he expressed a desire to develop strong relationships with the various university offices, as well as faculty and academic staff.
