ASF Climate Rally

After weeks of planning, Advocates for a Sustainable Future (ASF) saw a massive turnout for their Climate Rally on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Clarendon Bell. Immediately after the Dear Neighbor Convocation, 50-60 students, faculty and staff gathered at the Clarendon Bell to participate in the Global Climate Strike, during which four million people world wide, gathered within their communities to raise awareness for environmental issues and advocate for climate action.

ASF leaders, Amelia Bowser and Elysia Moy, encouraged people to join them and stand for climate action by signing a petition for solar panels on campus and hold signs with various slogans that showed their enthusiasm for climate action. After sharing ways students can become more involved with climate advocacy, the group spent time in prayer, after which they dispersed and proceeded to their classes.

Working with their advisor, Dr. Boorse, Bowser and Moy decided that their Climate Rally should take place during the Global Climate Strike to unite the campus around climate action, rather than striking against an institution. ASF wanted to bring the community together to face issues that affect everyone. If people want to get involved with promoting sustainability on campus, Moy says: “one of the easiest and most direct ways is to get involved with ASF.”
