Hidden on campus is a space where clothes, books, and dorm decor don’t go to waste. Instead, they find new homes attached with no price tags, no checkout lines, just a community-driven exchange. Ever heard of it? If not, you’re missing Gordon’s The Common Exchange.
Located in Chase Basement B14, the Common Exchange is a student-run thrift-style initiative designed to make sustainability and affordability accessible to everyone on campus. Whether you’re looking for a cozy sweater, a good book, a cute coffee mug, or some new dorm décor, this is the perfect place to find it; all for free. Led by Director Jamila-Ashanti Scales and Assistant Director Natalie Hammond, the Common Exchange seeks to create a space where students can express themselves, embrace adventure with style, promote sustainability, and foster the teachings of Jesus Christ, all while having fun. It’s more than just a place to shop for items; it’s a community-driven effort to give once-loved belongings a second life.
How It Works
Participating in The Common Exchange is simple. Thrifting hours are Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6:30 PM, offering students the chance to browse and take home items. Donations are always welcome and can be dropped off Thursdays and Fridays from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. While most clothing and household items are accepted, there are a few restrictions—undergarments, socks, and swimwear are not permitted.
With no financial barriers, the Common Exchange ensures that everyone, regardless of budget, has access to clothing and essential items. “I’ve been loving the Common Exchange lately! It’s not just a great place to pick up essentials; it also brings our campus community together. I’ve found so many useful and adorable pieces, all for free!” says Julia Ferreira, a frequent visitor.
Why It Matters
Beyond its practicality, the Common Exchange is making a lasting impact on campus. It provides a sustainable alternative to fast fashion, helping students embrace secondhand shopping and reduce waste. Instead of throwing away clothes, students are learning to repurpose and appreciate pre-loved items, contributing to a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Financially, it’s a game-changer. With the cost of college expenses piling up, constantly buying new clothes, dorm essentials, or even textbooks isn’t always realistic. The Common Exchange offers a solution, proving that sustainability and affordability can go hand in hand.
