Hello! My name is Kate Walker, and I am the current Editor-in-Chief of the Tartan following Collin Hall. This year, we will continue to report campus events, GCSA and sports updates, and administrative decisions to keep you up-to-date on student news. Beyond these, my vision for the Tartan is to create a safe platform for student voices and untold stories, with a focus on the arts and faith.
Our biggest goal for the semester is to promote active campus discussion, between both students and professors. Gordon hosts a wide array of voices and interests, with undergraduate and faculty experiences equally valuable contributors to campus dialogue. Balanced with student opinion pieces, the Tartan will be interviewing professors on their areas of research and common interests on subjects such environmental science, social issues, mental health, and current events. This way, you can get to know your professors for what they were first—curious students—and start conversations with them about your own interests in their field.
Our overarching theme is untold stories. We all have a very different story to tell, and unique experiences which influence the way we think and make decisions. We hope to provide a space for these stories to be told, whether through student highlights or news pieces. With this in mind, the Tartan will also be giving coverage to departments that aren’t typically highlighted by the college, such as the performing arts and music departments.
A relatively new addition to the paper is the Faith Column, where we will be discussing contemporary issues in the Church and in theology today. It goes without saying that we should be constantly examining our faith and the practices we create through our beliefs. It is my hope that this will be a platform for students from all backgrounds to engage with each other on their commonalities and differences.
Above all, the Tartan is here to serve you. We’re here to lift up student voices and help you know what’s happening at Gordon behind the scenes. If you have any interest in writing for us, we would be happy to talk with you!
