The Gordon College women’s volleyball team got a home win versus the Nichols College Bison last Saturday. It was Senior Day and all three seniors, Jamie Tafoya, Amanda Snyder, and Jenny Curtiss, were recognized and honored after the game for their commitment and dedication to the team.
The Scots won the first three sets and swept the Bison in a spirited and impressive victory. In the first set, seniors Amanda Snyder and Jamie Tafoya combined for 7 kills and led the team to their largest set win of the season by a score of 25-5.
The Bison came out stronger for the second and third sets, but it didn’t matter. The Scots kept up the intensity and forced a sweep.
Gordon ended the game with an impressive 39 kills and 37 assists. Seniors Amanda Snyder and Jamie Tafoya led the game in kills with 12 and 8, respectively. All three seniors led the game in aces for a combined 8 between them.
Between sets, the students and parents chanted the seniors’ names. One enthusiastic audience member started an “I say Gordon, you say seniors” chant. After the game, the seniors took photos with their families and were congratulated by the students and fans who came out to watch the game.
“I would say that this is the way you would want a senior to finish. They’re all playing at the peak of their abilities,” said Coach Sue Kelly. “So Jenny set a school record, Jamie and Amanda both set career highs on Wednesday, so you just can’t ask for better from them.”
Coach Kelly also said: “ The fact that all three of them basically started all four years is pretty memorable. A lot of times you’ll have a senior that comes on their junior year or when they are an upperclassman but they all have been a crucial part of the team for the last four years.”
Their achievements didn’t just occur on the court either.
“So I would say each of them were amazing leaders and role models not only on the court but spiritually and just being remarkable young women” said Coach Kelly.
The Scots will soon finish up their regular season and head to the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs.
“I’m excited by the way this team is finishing. We’re playing our best volleyball heading into the playoffs, which is what every coach hopes for, so I’m excited” Coach Kelly says.
The women’s volleyball team has two more regular season games and then they head to their first playoff game on November 5th.
