The Sweaty-Toothed Madmen are an improv comedy group that puts on shows throughout the year. This year, the group is co-directed by Daniel Alvarado ‘17 and Molly Sidell ‘17. The Sweaty-Toothed Madmen shows are a favorite among students and have been hilarious in the past. Auditions were held on Sept. 14 and Sept. 15.
The auditions started off with each person answering a few questions on a piece of paper, a simple way to see how people think. Next, everyone was directed to form a circle. Alvarado and Sidell taught them a song with little dance motions, and the students wound up just fooling around and having fun. From there, the students transitioned into more improv activities.
For improv auditions, Sidell and Alvarado split everyone up into two lines. For the first exercise, Alvarado was sitting in the front with a bell in his hand and Sidell was right beside him. A student would jump out of each line, take a seat in a chair on stage and improvise a conversation based on the provided subject. Alvarado’s bell signaled the beginning and end of the conversation.
After the larger group exercises, Sidell and Alvarado split the group into two. Sidell took half to another classroom for a small group exercise and the others stayed to work with Alvarado. The activities ranged from “Where Have my Fingers Been” to acting out a scene with another person based on mood. The atmosphere, light and relaxed, was made clear by the numerous smiles and laughter.
