Men’s tennis starts their spring 2018 season on Feb. 23 with a home match against Stonehill. They will host Wentworth in the CCC opener March 24 after they return from their spring break trip to California.
The Preseason Coachs’ Poll ranked the team to finish fifth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Last season the Fighting Scots finished third in the CCC last season, falling short behind Endicott.
Six players will be returning to the team. Five of those players won ten or more matches. Five of those players won ten or more matches and helped the Scots finish the season 16-6 (6-2 CCC). Senior Mason Casady (‘18) has had as strong tennis career and has gone 14-8 playing in the No. 1 singles spot. Senior Peter Godwin (‘18) is three wins away from 40 career singles victories. He posted a 13-7 record primarily playing at the No. 6 singles spot.
With this newfound determination to come out on top this season, the Scots are trying to revive a positive mindset. Peter Godwin 18’ says, “We had a difficult fall season against some tough opposition and going into the spring our coaches put together an acronym that really lays out what it means to be a Gordon College Tennis Player to refocus our minds” He adds, “HEART SOUL MIND stems from Matthew 22:37 which reads Jesus declared, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”.
The team’s goal for this year is to finish strong. It is not just about winning the conference championship or sweeping Endicott, but rather leaving it all on the line. The Scots have developed a brotherhood. And they look forward to competing with grit and determination. Godwin and teammates were exhorted after Tim Tebow came to speak at Gordon College this past October. He says, “After Tim Tebow came and spoke this past fall myself and my fellow senior teammates have been inspired to finish strong. That was Tim’s big mantra, finish strong.”
