With 10 games under their belt, Gordon’s Men’s Basketball team are determined to claim the CCC Championship title. They began their season campaign in mid-November with a win against Elms College, and as their season has continued, the Scots have shown nothing but a drive for success.
Coach Tod Murphy has been emphasizing to the team to offensively get a good shot each time, take care of the ball, defensively keep the opposing team out of the paint area, to finish plays and rebound.
Murphy often uses the expression “offensive is fun to play, defense wins games and rebounds wins championships.”
Captain Jacob Hart ‘18 said, “our coaches have stressed the importance of sacrificing and giving all you have for the benefit of the team. They want us to look to the team before ourselves on and off the court. When we look to make the team better, whether it be encouraging guys from the bench or making other guys look better on the court by how we play, we believe we can accomplish our goal of winning the league tournament.”
Aiming for success this season, this year’s starting line-up includes Sam Johnson ’17, Garrisson Duvivier ’19, Jake Hart ’18, Jaren Yang ’18, and Eric Demers ’19.
Demers said that he is not only looking forward to this year’s team but also said, “I think we have something very special right now, and it’s just beginning for us, I expect a lot from us this season.”
Johnson said, “I knew we were returning our entire starting lineup as well as key bench guys, so going into this season I had very high expectations for us. Last year we were so young so we could use that as an excuse but this year we have the skill and experience to be very good as long as we build off of what we did last year.”
Murphy said that one of his goals is to win 28 games in the upcoming season. “I always want our team goal to be is to reach our potential and if we do that then the wins and losses will take care of themselves, our potential is pretty high, and we are capable of competing in the league championships, this is where the improvement comes in,” said Murphy.
Players to look out for in upcoming games include Samuel Johnson’s rebounding, the shooting of Jake Harr and the leadership of Jake Hart and Jaren Yang.
Murphy said, “our explosiveness has been pretty impressive, but we have a lot of improvement we can do.”
The Scots are currently 6-4 in their overall season and are scheduled to play against Nichols on Jan. 30.
