As the spring season unravels, the Women’s Lacrosse team (5-3, 1-0 CCC) is off to a strong start. Their first seven games were against non-conference teams, including a spring break trip to Sewanee, Tennessee.
Although they faced defeat in both of their games over the break against Sewanee (6-11) and Goucher (11-12), head Coach Jane Ward ‘15 expressed her positive experience with the trip. She said, “The Spring Training trip was full of hard work and bonding. Ideally, I would have loved to win both those games but that’s not how it worked out. It was very cold which also wasn’t ideal either but as always, GCWLAX made it a memorable trip (of course with a lot of dancing).”
The Scots bounced back after break to win two closely scored games against Lasell (14-13) and Curry (11-10).
Ward said, “This record shows a true depiction of the beginning of our season. We are talented, but have some changes to make and lessons to learn. We’re better because of both of our wins and losses.”
In terms of individual statistics, Olivia McCarrick ‘19 is dominating the field in terms of goals scored, with an impressive total of 30 goals so far this season and averaging a .517 shooting percentage.
The team’s new goalie is a crucial asset to the team. Melanie Dywer ‘20 has made a total of 45 saves so far this season.
With Curry being their only conference game so far, Ward is hopeful for how her team will continually play against these teams. “When it come to conference games, we have history with teams. Because of this fact, I think the ladies often push a little bit harder or run a little bit longer. We have more at stake, a championship we want to win. We better know what to expect from the teams we face in conference and know how much more it means to beat them.”
