As students prepare for the next year, Gordon College’s Global Education Office (GEO) continues to enhance its study abroad opportunities. While programs in Orvieto, the Balkans, and Edinburgh have long been popular, students can explore newer and more niche opportunities, particularly in New Zealand.

The study abroad opportunity in New Zealand caters to students from diverse majors. Two standout programs are the University of Otago exchange and the Creation Care Study Program (CCSP), both offering distinct academic focuses and experiences for students eager to expand their global perspectives.

University of Otago

For students majoring in Biology, Kinesiology, or Psychology, the University of Otago in Dunedin presents a compelling opportunity. Otago, New Zealand’s oldest university, has a welcoming environment that draws students from over 100 countries.

Gordon College’s partnership with Otago encourages students to engage with New Zealand’s unique cultural history. Otago’s academic structure is slightly different from that of Gordon. For example, a single semester course at Otago is worth 18 points, equating to roughly 3-5 U.S. credits. Students typically take 3-4 courses per semester, balancing science-based classes with electives that explore New Zealand’s rich history and culture.

The application process for Otago requires students to apply to GEO by March 1. Eligible students must have Sophomore standing, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and approval from their academic advisor. Additionally, financial aid is reassessed for those accepted into the program.

Creation Care Study Program

For students interested in environmental studies and sustainability, the Creation Care Study Program (CCSP) offers a distinctive semester abroad in New Zealand that combines academics with Christian faith. This program, based in Kaikoura, encourages students to engage deeply with issues such as conservation, ecology, and sustainable development, while simultaneously exploring theological perspectives on the environment.

The CCSP curriculum is interdisciplinary, featuring courses such as Sustainable Community Development, New Zealand Ecosystems, and God and Nature. Additionally, CCSP emphasizes community living, as students reside at the Old Convent campus and participate in homestays with local families. This element of the program enhances the cultural exchange and provides a more grounded experience of Kiwi life.

Like Otago, the CCSP program has an application deadline of March 1. However, this program is open to a wider range of majors, provided students have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and a strong commitment to academics and faith. While federal and private aid remains unaffected, students may see changes in their Gordon-awarded financial aid for this program.

Both the University of Otago and CCSP target students from particular academic disciplines. Otago’s science-focused approach makes it ideal for Biology, Kinesiology, and Psychology majors, while CCSP appeals more broadly to those studying environmental science, sustainability, and theology. Each program provides an enriching experience, blending rigorous academic work with hands-on learning and cultural immersion.
