At this time of year, as winter starts to set in, I find that I take a lot more walks around campus to refocus as the semester gets busier. Usually, that will bring me far across campus- and while the campus is a beautiful sight to see (and may have snow soon!), what I always get distracted by are the local animals. While a lot of animals are commonplace, seeing how we coexist with them on a college campus is always a treat, however imposing the geese may be. So, for those who are new to Gordon or simply curious, here are a few animals you can find on campus!
Squirrels: These creatures you’ll probably see every day across Gordon, as they are known to be a common staple of many college campuses. You may see them stashing food away, leaping across the sidewalk, or hiding carefully away in the trees. But my favorite example is seeing them jump out of trash cans.
Otters: If you keep your eyes peeled, you can sometimes see otters in Gull Pond! I’ve found their appearance is rare, but well worth it!
Raccoons: You can see these slightly intimidating, cat-like, nocturnal creatures mainly around the dumpsters and sometimes along the trails. While many consider them to be cute, they can take care of themselves!
Pigeons: My favorite on this list, you can see Pigeons all over campus, usually hanging around in the mornings. Fun fact, Pigeons have been domesticated for thousands of years!
Geese: Probably the most controversial animal on campus, whenever the geese fly in, they take over the quad day and night, and make their presence well known. Despite this, they have a certain star power about them on campus – even having a few events named after them!
Rabbits: Usually, you can see Rabbits at night darting around campus. Adorable and smart, they are a staple at Gordon.
These are just a few of the local fauna that we share Gordon’s campus with! While they can often fall into the background, they help to make Gordon more complete.
