Thanks to a virus that I will not name here, as it is already mentioned in the news enough, I have a bit of free time. Will I do something productive with that free time? Of course not! Time to watch some comedy movies to lighten the mood. Here are four classics and four new comedies to watch while practicing social distancing!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a parody film from the British comedy group Monty Python. This silly movie follows the adventures of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table on their quest to find the Holy Grail. This classic film offers plenty of laughs and many quotable lines. “Tis but a scratch!” “A scratch? Your arm’s off!” I really wanted to reference “Bring out your dead” but that might hit too close to home.
Back to the Future (1985)
Not only is Back to the Future, a great comedy, a great sci-fi film, but in my honest opinion, it’s one of the best movies of all time. Back to the Future follows Marty McFly as he accidentally travels back in time. Stuck 30 years in the past, Marty must now figure out a way to get back to the future but also make sure he doesn’t mess up his own timeline too much. The premise is so creative, the characters are fantastic, and the sets look realistic. This movie has truly withstood the test of time.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
This is one coming-of-age classic comedy that everyone should watch at least once. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off follows the titular character as he gets out of school by pretending to be sick, gets his friends together, and spends the rest of the day in Chicago, all the while teaching you, the audience, how to take it easy. Now that we all have our own day’s off, maybe we can take after Bueller and go outside. After you watch this movie first, of course.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
What is it about Holy Grails and Nazis that make for such great cinema? We may never know, but Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, is a wild ride that follows Indy and his father’s adventure through Venice, Austria, and even the heart of Nazi Germany on a quest for the Holy Grail. It’s got some great witty one-liners, and some great action sequences.
JoJo Rabbit (2019)
A boy in Hitler’s youth finds out that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their house. And his imaginary friend is Hitler. And it’s a satirical comedy. That’s the premise of JoJo Rabbit. It doesn’t sound like it would work, but it does, and it’s hilarious. The movie can be funny, sad, or a mix of both at times. It’s a clever, original movie, which is hard to come by these days.
Knives Out (2019)
By now, you are probably sick of people telling you to watch Knives Out. Do yourself a favor, and just watch it already. I watched it thinking it was just another murder mystery movie, and my expectations were blown out of the water. I honestly didn’t know what was going to happen next. Not only is it intriguing, it has some genuinely funny moments. It’s a real gem to watch.
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock are back 10 years later and ready to get the zombie kill of the year. Zombieland: Double Tap, the sequel of cult classic Zombieland, is a fun horror-comedy that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. Most sequels that come out 10 years after the original aren’t great, but not Zombieland: Double Tap. This sequel keeps the spirit of the first one alive (pun intended) and takes zombie killing to a new level. Oh, and stay for the mid-credit scene, it’s the best part of the movie.
Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
I didn’t know if I would enjoy Birds of Prey or not, but I found it to be a solid movie in the DC Extended Universe series (which it desperately needs more of). Harley Quinn has finally ended her relationship with the Joker, and now she is ready to live her life the way she wants. Which of course involves blowing stuff up, hyenas, and evading a mob boss. It is a humorous nonstop action movie that likes to break the fourth wall.
