This fall, Gordon’s improv group, The Sweaty-Toothed Madmen bring on three new members: Joe Hayes, Q Goke, and Josiah Kangas.
Joe, is a Christian Ministries and Biblical Studies major. This freshman is a New Jersey native and WWE wrestling fan, spends most weekends cheering on pro wrestler Broadus Clay, also known as the Funkasaurus Rex. Despite Clay having one of the worst WWE records ever to exist, Joe considers him one of his greatest inspirations, in part due to his “funky name”. But when it comes to comedy, there’s one man who serves it to Funkasaurus Rex and that’s Jack Black. Joe first fell in love with his all-time favorite comedian watching “Nacho Libre” and now draws inspiration from the legendary funny man for his own comedy. And just like the character of Nacho himself, Joe has big dreams as he steps onto the improv stage for the first time with the Sweaty-Toothed Madmen this year.
Hailing from Cambodia, Josiah Kangas is apart of the class of ‘23. This Computer Science major is soft-spoken but carries himself proud in his shoe of choice: crocs. Even at his high school graduation banquet he sported a pair of the popular foam clogs. On special occasions, Josiah will wear his black pair, but usually he opts for teal. If you can’t spot Josiah by his teal crocs, look for a slender, spikey-haired boy on a unicycle. He claims “it was the only thing he had to ride since his rip-stick broke.” Josiah finds inspiration from the company Game Dev. Upon completing the game To the Moon, Josiah claims it was the “first time in my life I’ve wept like a small child.” This company has inspired Josiah to make games of his own.
Q Goke, from Atlanta, Ga, first found his footing in comedy when he was selected to represent the freshmen class in 2019’s Golden Goose comedy show. Q’s draws inspiration from Jim Carey, especially his performance in “Ace Venture Pet Detective.” Another character he admires is Donkey in “Shrek,” because Donkey really shows how lighthearted comedic relief can help bond people together, like him and Shrek in the movie. This upcoming year, Q has the opportunity to follow in Donkey’s footsteps by joining the cast of the Sweaty Toothed Madmen and bringing some good, light-hearted fun to Gordon’s campus.
With such a young crew of freshmen, sophomores and juniors, this 2019-2020 STM squad will have the next couple of years to hone their routines. This semester, The Sweaty-Toothed Madmen anticipate a show once a month, kicking off their season on October 5.
